How does It Work?

This simulation facilitates learning through experience among a team of 3-5 participants. Using a simple story creates a light and engaging context. The team starts by working in a “business as usual” push mode, observing the consequences of working without clear flow and customer focus. After reflection, they define concrete actions and gradually transform into a Kanban team with WIP limits and relevant flow-oriented policies. Guided by facilitators, participants “experience by doing” critical Kanban practices:

  • Visualization of workflow
  • Introduction of WIP limits
  • Conducting team Kanban and retrospective meetings
  • Defining policies related to work types
  • Interpreting Cumulative Flow Diagrams and Scatter Charts
  • Dealing with variability in planning and organizing work

They also experience a change in team member habits and behaviours, including greater collaboration, knowledge sharing, and focus on meeting customer expectations.

The team works on Businessmap, the leading Kanban platform. As a result, participants discover how Kanban supports effective workflow management and become curious to learn in-depth Kanban practices.

Who Should Participate?

The workshop is beneficial for various roles, such as mid-level managers, project managers, product owners, process improvement leads/consultants, organizational change agents, team members, developers, and anyone involved in team-related work. No prior Kanban/flow training or experience is required.

What is the Simulation Format?

  • An experienced Kanban professional, coach, or consultant leads the simulation and answers questions.
  • Three to five participants play as a team online on a specially configured Businessmap instance.
  • In four hours, participants play between 20 and 40 simulation days, conducting four to eight review meetings.
  • In two to five extended review meetings, an experienced Kanban coach facilitates in-depth discussions about applying Kanban and workflow practices.
